Renovating a home is an exciting time. Be sure to take all members of your household into consideration, including your furry family members. Creating pet-friendly spaces can help make your renovations sustainable for the long-term.
Renovations of any kind, even pet projects, can be costly or labor intensive. Determine if you will DIY (do-it-yourself) your pet project or hire a professional.

First, consider what pet projects you want to tackle. There are a variety of ways to give your pets a comfortable living environment. In fact, the National Association of Realtors’® 2019 Remodeling Impact Report: DIY lists some of the home renovations pet owners have done. Projects that respondents undertook to benefit their fur babies included fenced yards and built-in pet beds.
The report looks at the differences between undertaking remodeling projects using professional help versus a DIY approach. The report also provides home owner’s Joy Score (ranked from 1 to 10) for each project. Those who undertook a DIY approach for pet projects reported a Joy Score of 9.4, and a Joy Score of 9.3 when they hired a pro to complete the projects.
|Project type||Hired professional||DIY|
|Cat litter box||2%||7%|
|Built-ins for pet dishes||1%||2%|
|Built-ins for pet beds||1%||4%|
Next, get cost estimates to determine if DIY or hiring a professional is right for you. Figure out the materials and time you’ll need for the project. Compare the DIY project budget with a quote or two from a professional.
Lastly, remember to think through the long-term implications of your pet projects. For example, if you plan to sell your house know what the projects will do to benefit or restrict the sale.
Your pets will love you even more for the great space you create for them in your home! What types of DIY projects have you taken on to make your home a pet-friendly space?
